When should you replace your water filters?
Most New Zealand homes and businesses underestimate how often filters need changing. As a rule of thumb: sediment cartridges every 6–9 months; carbon block cartridges every 6–12 months; RO membranes every 2–3 years; UV lamps every 12 months even if they look fine; and softener resin or media every 7–10 years depending on hardness load. On rural tank or bore water, expect to change pre-filters more often — sometimes every 3 months — because of higher sediment and organic loads. Signs your filters need changing include: noticeable drop in water flow at the tap, return of chlorine taste or smell, cloudy water, drop in RO permeate quality (rising TDS), or simply the calendar reminder ticking over.
